Welcome to GirlPowerNever has there been a time when it's been so important for a girl to be able to drive... and never has it been so difficult to pass the driving test! That's why it's important that you get a driving instructor who you're really happy with. It has always been a requirement that an instructor be a "fit and proper person". But now all Instructors, male and female, need to have CRB checks. The DSA also has a voluntary code of conduct, and finally all instructors are regularly assessed to ensure that their instruction is of a satisfactory standard. Not all Instructors are fully qualified - a pink badge means they are a trainee and a green badge that they are fully qualified. It's best to ask before you start your lessons!
There are many all female driving schools as well as many that can provide either male or female instructors. If you want lessons in an automatic car, your choice of female instructors may be more limited.
Although some girls may be more comfortable with a female driving instructor, most instructors both male and female teach to a high standard and treat their pupils in a professional manner. There is no evidence that male or female instructors have a higher pass rate or provide a higher standard of instruction. Remember, the important thing is to find an instructor who you feel happy with. Some driving schools put a lot of effort into their image - but remember that image is less important than good quality lessons to pass your test! A good idea is to ask your mates who they have learnt with. If it doesn't work out with your instructor, try to talk it through with them. If you can't sort it out with them, you might be best off finding a new instructor. If you have a serious complaint about an instructor you can contact the DSA.
